Watch: Firehouse Active Adult Center: Connection, fitness, and fun for older adults

Philadelphia Corporation for Aging’s (PCA) efforts to promote community and connection at senior centers across the city was spotlighted on 6abc’s Art of Aging segment, a news series that connects adults with various resources throughout the region.

Every Wednesday, 76-year-old Ray Boyd leads a soul line dancing class at the Firehouse Active Adult Center in West Philadelphia. “They call me the old man, but they try to keep up,” Boyd jokes. His class, focused on fitness and fun, is one of many activities designed to enrich the lives of older adults.

Supported by Philadelphia Corporation for Aging (PCA), Firehouse is one of 28 senior centers citywide offering art, computer classes, Bingo, and daily nutritious lunches. “We provide opportunities for friendship and socialization,” says Jacqui Makowski, PCA Senior Center Supervisor.

In celebration of National Senior Center Month during September, Firehouse and other centers are highlighting the theme ‘Powered by Connections,’ reflecting their commitment to keeping older adults engaged and connected.

Members like Barbara Dantley, a volunteer Bingo caller, and Rita Foster-Opher, who enjoys the center’s hot lunches, find connection and community. “There’s something to do after retirement or even after work,” says Jacqueline King, center counselor. “Our doors are always open.” Firehouse is part of PCA’s mission to help older adults stay active, connected, and healthy.
