The United Way supports older adults
By Mary Anna Rodabaugh
The United Way of Greater Philadelphia and Southern New Jersey connects individuals and families to the assistance they need through health and human services resources in the region. The United Way serves the entire region, including Bucks, Chester, Delaware, Montgomery and Philadelphia Counties, as well as New Jersey.
The United Way also helps people develop the skills and support they need to become financially independent. For older adults, resources could include utility assistance, better access to food, housing assistance and internet connectivity.
211 Helpline
United Way emphasizes that an immediate need calls for immediate assistance. The 211 Helpline is a fast, free and confidential resource for people in need.
“United Way’s 211 helpline connects people of every age to the resources they need – whether it’s support for children, families or older adults,” said Rev. Bill Golderer, president and CEO, United Way of Greater Philadelphia and Southern New Jersey. “Having one easy-to-use number that connects our community to vital, local services is essential to ensuring every person, from our youngest neighbors to our older adults, can live with dignity, stability and hope.”
While the United Way serves people of all ages throughout the region, the following resources are of particular help to older Philadelphians.
Digital Navigator Services
The internet is currently one of the best methods to connect with loved ones, information and resources. But some older adults may not have access to low-cost reliable internet at home. The United Way’s Digital Navigator Services program bridges this technology gap. The program helps older adults sign up for free or affordable internet access, obtain low-cost computers and devices, find digital literacy programs and classes, and get help to resolve connectivity issues.
Violence prevention
The 211 Violence Prevention Helpline can connect older adults to safety resources 24/7. This can include conflict resolution and counseling. Calls are confidential and more than 150 languages are available.
Caregiver support
The United Way will connect caregivers with respite care resources. If you would like to talk with someone about the joys and challenges of caring for a loved one, you can call 211 to connect with a local specialist.
“For older adults and their caregivers, 211 offers a clear path to trusted support. We help with everything from housing and food resources to in-home services,” Golderer said. “By helping people quickly find the right assistance, 211 strengthens the independence and well-being of Philadelphia’s aging community.”
