WATCH: PCA’s Caregiver Support Program Featured on 6abc’s Art of Aging

Philadelphia Corporation for Aging’s (PCA) Caregiver Support Program was recently highlighted on 6abc’s Art of Aging segment, featuring Darlene McGlotten-Whitehead, a dedicated caregiver raising her 10-year-old granddaughter, Laila. Like many older adults who unexpectedly step into the role of primary caregiver, McGlotten-Whitehead faced financial concerns but found much-needed support through PCA.

“If your grandchildren need school clothes, they help with that,” she shared in the segment. “And just knowing that takes a lot off you.”

PCA’s Caregiver Support Program provides financial reimbursements for caregiving expenses, including summer camps, after-school programs, extracurricular activities, childcare, and respite care for caregivers themselves. Participants also receive guidance from a dedicated care manager who connects them with additional resources to support their caregiving journey.

“It’s a holistic approach,” said Cheryl Clark-Woods, PCA’s Director of the Caregiver Support Program. “We have a care manager who assists older relatives and grandparents connect to whatever will support them in their caregiving.”

To qualify for the program, caregivers must be 55 or older, live in Philadelphia, reside with the child, and be the primary caregiver. Financial eligibility requirements also apply.

McGlotten-Whitehead encourages others to seek support: “I just pray and hope that a lot of grandmothers just reach out and get to this program because it will help you.”
