Watch: Fresh food, strong communities: PCA’s commitment to older adult nutrition

Bill Conallen

Philadelphia Corporation for Aging’s (PCA) efforts to promote healthy nutrition across diverse communities was spotlighted on 6abc’s Art of Aging segment, a news series that connects adults with various resources throughout the region.

Joseph Kane, a dedicated member of the South Philadelphia Older Adult Center for the past eleven years, finds joy in both his passion for pool and the fresh produce made available through Philadelphia Corporation for Aging’s (PCA) Senior Farmer’s Market Nutrition Program. Kane, along with other center members, receives $50 in produce vouchers to purchase fresh fruits and vegetables at approved farmer’s markets across Pennsylvania.

Skylar Young, Special Projects Coordinator at PCA, emphasizes that the program promotes healthy eating and is available to Philadelphia residents aged 60 and over who meet income guidelines. Vouchers can be redeemed until November 30th, though older adults are encouraged to use them early to enjoy the freshest produce.

At the East Passyunk Market, where vendors like Cherri Blossom Farm participate, Kane enjoys purchasing a variety of fresh produce, enhancing his diet and overall well-being. The program not only supports healthy eating but also provides older adults with the convenience of nearby markets and valuable nutrition education materials.

For more information on the program, including how to apply for vouchers, call the PCA Helpline at 215-765-9040.
