Watch: Finding community through PCA’s Dom Care Program

Recently highlighted on 6abc’s Art of Aging segment, Philadelphia Corporation for Aging’s (PCA) Domiciliary Care (Dom Care) Program is a unique supported living arrangement that helps adults with disabilities find a nurturing home environment. Kathleen Flynn and Patricia Fordham are one of the many success stories created through Dom Care. Fordham, a dedicated provider in the program for nearly eight years, welcomed Flynn into her home, offering her a sense of family and companionship.

“I needed a place to live, but I really wanted to live with a family,” says Flynn. Now, they share meals, conversations, and even what they fondly call their “kitchen dance.” Flynn describes Fordham as a mix of girlfriend, sister, and provider. The program’s aim is to provide a supportive, family-like atmosphere that allows consumers to live with independence and dignity, while also receiving help with daily tasks such as medication management, transportation, and other light assistance.

Joy Thomas, PCA’s Dom Care Manager, explains, “Dom Care is for adults over the age of 18 who need support due to physical, mental, or emotional impairments. It’s about finding a caring home environment where they feel valued and secure.” Providers in the program undergo a thorough certification process, including background checks, personal and medical references, and comprehensive training to ensure their homes are safe and welcoming.

Fordham, who once faced an empty nest, says, “I love helping people, and Dom Care gives me the chance to make a difference in someone’s life.” PCA’s long-term care department determines eligibility for those interested in joining as consumers, while new providers are always needed.

Dom Care providers like Fordham make a significant impact by creating a home where adults with disabilities can thrive. For more information on becoming a Dom Care provider, visit PCACares.org or call 215-765-9040.
