Philadelphia Corporation for Aging (PCA) held its inaugural ‘Carousel of Talent’ Show at the Philadelphia Senior Center on the Avenue of the Arts, featuring about 40 older adults highlighting their talents through various acts, including spoken word, dancing, and singing. Participants came from nine different senior centers across Philadelphia, such as Norris Square Senior Community Center, Firehouse Active Adult Center, and On Lok Senior Center.

Julie Nelson, Senior Center Manager, highlighted the importance of showcasing the talent and vibrancy of older adults, emphasizing that senior centers help alleviate isolation and provide opportunities for socialization and new activities. Wanda Mitchell, PCA’s Director of Community Engagement, stressed the role of senior centers in fostering community and social interaction, reinforcing PCA’s mission to improve the quality of life for older adults and celebrate their creativity. Mitchell also announced plans to make the talent show an annual event.

Alice Flamer, one of the participants, expressed her love for singing and the joy it brings her, appreciating the opportunity provided by the talent show to engage with others and stay active. Alcira Laurenzi, another performer, shared her long-standing passion for belly dance, which she finds both spiritually and physically beneficial.

The event celebrated the diverse talents of older adults and provided a platform for them to be seen and appreciated, fostering a sense of community and joy among participants and attendees.
