PCA-supported fitness classes keep older adults active
Twice a week, Sandra Steward leads EnhanceFitness classes at Star Harbor Senior Community Center in Southwest Philadelphia, helping older adults stay active, improve mobility, and build strength. Recently highlighted on 6abc’s Art of Aging segment, the hour-long classes include a five-minute warmup, 30 minutes of aerobic exercise and 20 minutes of strength training. Participants say the benefits go beyond just fitness.
“She expects a lot from us, and I think she gets a lot from us,” said Dorothy Beidler, who takes Steward’s class and participates in chair yoga at the center. Ivy Goldstein, another participant, credits the class with keeping her flexible. “It keeps us pretty much fit. It keeps us from getting stiff,” she said.
Philadelphia Corporation for Aging (PCA) helps support 28 senior centers across the city, each offering a variety of health and wellness programs designed to keep older adults engaged and moving. “One of the main initiatives of PCA is to make sure that we’re providing health and wellness for all of our older adults,” said Jacqui Makowski, PCA’s senior center supervisor.
EnhanceFitness, which currently serves more than 385 enrollees, offers an energetic and supportive environment for participants. “With the music, it just really makes you feel like you’re at a party at 10 in the morning,” said Star Harbor Center Manager Janada Carter.
In addition to the physical benefits, the program fosters a strong sense of community among participants. “I just like the community of people here. Everybody’s so affirming,” Beidler said. Goldstein agreed, adding, “You’re working for the same goal. It’s like a family here.”
“I’m seeing a lot of improvement in terms of their walking,” Steward said. “That makes me really feel good.”
For those looking to stay active and connected, Makowski encourages them to explore the many programs available at PCA’s senior centers. “Check it out,” she said. “Get healthy, get active and visit us at our senior centers!”
