Hearts of Gold: Celebrating Senior Center Volunteers During National Volunteer Month

Bill Conallen

At Philadelphia Corporation for Aging, volunteers are the heartbeat of our mission. Every day, they bring compassion, dedication, and a personal touch to the lives of older adults in our community. April is National Volunteer Month—a special time to honor those who  support their communities.

From preparing meals and mentoring others to offering tech guidance and leading games, PCA volunteers show up in big and small ways. This month, we’re highlighting three remarkable people whose stories reflect the spirit of service that drives us forward.

Ms. Vedues – A Guiding Light at St. Edmond Senior Center

At St. Edmond Senior Center, Ms. Vedues has become a cherished part of the fabric of daily life since she joined in 2018. Her helping hands are everywhere—from the kitchen to game time, where she hosts lively Pokeno sessions filled with laughter and camaraderie. She’s known for her joy, her reliability, and the way she makes the center feel like home.

Ms. Vedues doesn’t stop at volunteer duties. She supports the Enhance Fitness class, setting up water and cheering everyone on. As a member of the center’s Advisory Council, she’s also a trusted advocate and voice for improving programs and services. Her love is shown in her consistency, leadership, and the warmth she brings with her each day. To those at St. Edmond, she’s not just a volunteer—she’s family.

Mrs. Phyllis Sledge – A Steadfast Supporter at PSC’s Avenue of the Arts Branch

At Philadelphia Senior Center’s Avenue of the Arts Branch, longtime volunteer Phyllis Sledge has been making an impact since 2012. A dedicated presence in the café and with MANNA food packaging for homebound residents, Phyllis brings heart to every task she takes on. Her work ensures that older adults not only receive nourishing meals but also know that someone cares.

Phyllis is also an amazing mother, grandmother, and friend—roles she fulfills with the same warmth and energy she brings to PSC. She has become a pillar of the community, always ready to lend a hand or a kind word. Her journey as a member and volunteer reflects a deep-rooted commitment to uplifting others and fostering a welcoming space for all.

Mr. Dick Berman – Technology & Tax Hero at KleinLife

Over at KleinLife, volunteer Dick Berman has been sharing his knowledge and generosity for years. In the Tech Center, he helps seniors navigate computers, phones, tablets, and more, making sure technology is accessible and empowering for all. Beyond helping one-on-one, Dick also coordinates the Tech Center’s volunteer schedule, ensuring smooth operations and plenty of support for members.

Most recently, Dick has taken the lead on KleinLife’s Tax Preparation Program, providing vital assistance to low-income older adults during tax season. His efforts have lifted burdens and brought peace of mind to many. As a board member, Dick has gone even further—his generous donation helped upgrade all the computers in the Tech Center, ensuring the center continues to meet the needs of its growing community.

A Community Fueled by Kindness

Volunteers like Ms. Vedues, Mrs. Phyllis Sledge, and Mr. Dick Berman represent the best of who we are at PCA. They give not for recognition, but because they care—because they believe in the power of connection, service, and dignity for all older adults.

This National Volunteer Month, and every month, we thank them and all the volunteers who bring PCA’s mission to life. Your time, compassion, and commitment create a more caring, vibrant Philadelphia.
